Al Gen Dinner Club
Yesterday’s atmosphere serving today’s favorites describes the Al-Gen Dinner Club perfectly.
Built in 1932 by Al and Genevieve Nelson, the logs are held together by hayrack tines that were actually straightened to form large steel pins.
Over the years, the Al-Gen has had several owners. Locals will recall Ole Hetzel in the early 1950’s, then Ed and Gladys Nelson in the 1960’s, who remodeled the bar room making the round bar that you see today.
In 1972 Jack and JoAnne Elliott purchased the Al-Gen. It was on May 30, 1976, the Elliotts suffered a major kitchen fire that was caused by a faulty electrical box. The main structure sustained little damage; however, because of smoke, the walls were sandblasted to restore them to their original blond color.
In October of 1980, Don and Joyce Mills purchased the restaurant. Don ran the kitchen and Joyce ran the dining room and bar until their retirement on June 1, 1993.
With Many owners over the years the Al-Gen has always taken pride in serving excellent food and providing friendly, efficient service.
Ministry Health Care

Over 66 million dollars were invested to bring this hospital and clinic – and the most advanced medical technology – to the region. As many of you know, the future of medicine is in diagnostics. We glean volumes more with today’s equipment than we could just five years ago. Thanks to a generous donation from James and Carolyn Beck, the new medical campus has the very best imaging technology available. Our imaging capabilities now equal those of hospitals in major cities. The opening of our new facility marks a breakthrough in Women’s Health for the northern Wisconsin region. Women and their families no longer have to travel to access the most progressive women’s health care. Our new facility is equipped with ultramodern and comforting birthing suites (complete with Jacuzzi tubs to ease labor pains), a cesarean surgical suite, and the most advanced imaging equipment available. Our team of oncology specialists continues to lead the way in the region in clinical trials, research, aggressive cancer treatment, innovative technology and more. The team has been both regionally and nationally recognized for its efforts. The unveiling of our new Cancer Center adds to the growing excitement of such a prestigious diagnosis and treatment program. Saint Mary’s Hospital and Ministry Medical Group are committed to brining unsurpassed health care services to the Northwoods. We look forward to being able to share this regional model of excellence with all of Northern Wisconsin.
Forth Floral
For over 100 years, Forth Floral has been growing and thriving! In 1900, a greenhouse in the center of a rough lumberjack town like Rhinelander didn't seem to stand much of a chance for survival, much less success. Originally named Philipps Greenhouse for it’s original owners, Peter and Lena Philipp, Forth Floral still stands on its original location on 410 North Brown Street in downtown Rhinelander.
In 1928, their daughter Julia and her husband Arthur Forth bought the business and renamed it Forth Floral which they then owned and operated into the 1970's. In 1958, Julia and Art's daughter, Leona, and her husband, Marv Schumacher, came into the business and began the third generation of outstanding customer service in the floral business.
In 1988, Leona and Marv’s daughter Ruth came into the business. Carrying on a four-generation family tradition, Ruth and her husband Henning Hempel have helped Forth Floral blossom, adding modern floral techniques and services to a business that continues to flourish.
Business hours are from 8:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Saturday.
